As of January 1, 2026, the Ontario Fire Code introduced significant updates, primarily expanding carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements for existing homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages, mandating alarms on every storey and near sleeping areas. Other changes affect complex buildings with integrated life-safety systems (requiring CAN/ULC-S1001 integrated testing) and minor wording changes (like "fire-stop flap" to "fire stop flap") for harmonization with the National Fire Code.
Key Changes for Homes (Effective Jan 1, 2026)
Location: A CO alarm is now required adjacent to every sleeping area and on every storey, including those without bedrooms.
Applies To: All existing homes with gas furnaces, water heaters, stoves, fireplaces, or attached garages.
Responsibility: Homeowners must install alarms; landlords must ensure rental properties comply.
What to Do
Check Alarms: Ensure you have certified CO alarms (CSA, ULC, ETL approved) in the correct locations.
Install More: If needed, purchase and install additional alarms before the deadline.

Identification Sought Following Indecent Act on GO Train
UPDATE: (Jan 5, 2026)
As a result of follow up investigation by members of the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau the suspect in this incident has been identified.
On January 2, 2026, a 44 year old male of Brampton, was arrested and charged with one count of Indecent Act.
The accused was released on an Undertaking with a future court date in Milton.
ORIGINAL RELEASE: (Aug 26, 2025)
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is requesting the public’s assistance with identifying a male who masturbated in the presence of a female passenger while onboard a GO Train.
The incident took place on Saturday April 26, 2025, at approximately 4:12 pm. While onboard the Lakeshore GO Train travelling from Fairview Burlington Station to Toronto Union Station the suspect continuously masturbated over his pants while staring at the female passenger.
The suspect is described as a white male with a scruffy grey and brown beard, wearing a black beanie, blue jacket, light grey hoodie, light coloured sweatpants, carrying a navy blue bag.
The female victim did not sustain any physical injuries.
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777 ext. 2216.

Charges Laid Following Investigation Into High End Vehicle Fraud
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) have made an arrest and laid multiple charges following an investigation into high end vehicle fraud.
On December 11, 2025, the accused attended Budd’s Imported Cars located at 227 Wyecroft Road in Oakville where he expressed interest in purchasing a Land Rover SUV worth in excess of $200,000. An agreement was made for the purchase of the vehicle, delivery date pending, with the accused providing what was later determined by Budd’s staff members to be fraudulent identification.
Upon discovery of the fraudulent identification police were contacted with members of the HRPS Financial Crime Unit taking carriage of the investigation.
As a result of the investigation a positive identification of the accused was obtained and on December 16, 2025 the accused was arrested. Upon arrest the accused was found in possession of multiple pieces of fraudulent identification, which included Canadian SIN cards, drivers licences and birth certificates.
Ambady Sajeev (27) of Oshawa, has been charged with the following offences:
• Fraud Over $5000
• Identity Fraud – Personation with Intent
• Fail to Comply with Probation Order
Sajeev has been released on an Undertaking with a future court date in Milton.
“Vehicle theft can take many forms, and this incident is another example of how thieves can and will utilize various strategies and schemes in order to acquire high end vehicles. Credit to Budd’s staff for detecting the fraudulent identification which initiated our investigation, it’s examples of community vigilance such as this that unites us as we hold these criminals accountable” Detective Sergeant Jared McLeod, Manager, Financial Crimes.
