
| Mandate: To provide rapid response to a variety of situations ranging from first aid emergencies to Security / law enforcement and searches for missing persons. Background: HARP's bike team was started in the summer of 1995 by Rod Frost our Supervisor of Operations. Rod had a keen interest in mountain biking as a hobby and realized the value of utilizing bikes in a security application. Out of this idea the HARP bike team was formed. All team members are volunteers and utilize their own bikes. The adaptability, speed and stealth of the bikes have allowed them to provide a security presence over a much larger area than previously possible. The speed of their response has aided with numerous first aid situations and trouble areas. The unit has proven itself invaluable in many areas and will continue to be utilized in numerous diverse areas this summer !!! The team has since been used for a variety of charity and special events. There past accomplishments include:
TRAINING Due to the vast range of applications that the bike team see's the training is intense. Bike team officers must complete the basic Security Officer's Testing Course. All members must have a valid First Aid and CPR certificate and advanced First Aid. They must also have a minimum of two years experience in a security related capacity. Once the officers have meet these minimums the bike training begins. The bike training includes all types of riding from urban to rural, from dry and hot to cold and wet. A section of local trails consisting of gravel trails to single track through the woods are utilized. All members must be able to maneuver their bikes down step embankments and stairs. All members participate in vigorous rides throughout Ontario to keep in shape. (Kelso, Hardwood Hills, etc.) Training and group rides are usually scheduled for at least once a week |
